Utah ranks among worst states for COVID-19 case rates

New coronavirus cases increased in 9.2% in Utah in the latest week ending Saturday as the state added 22,838 cases. The previous week had 20,906 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Utah ranked No. 10 among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week the United States added 1,184,520 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 16.5% from the week before. Across the country, 44 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Within Utah, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Utah, Wasatch and Salt Lake counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Salt Lake County, with 8,438 cases; Utah County, with 5,167 cases; and Davis County, with 2,231. Weekly case counts rose in seven counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties.
